Visiting the Maitland Art Center
Every moment I can, I take the time to visit new places within the surrounding area where I live in Central Florida. This past Sunday, my husband and I went to spend a few hours at the Maitland Art Center. I was really impressed with this little treasure at just an 18-minute drive from Altamonte Springs. The Maitland Art Center was founded and designed in 1937 as an art colony, by an architect and artist named J. Andre Smith, and it was dedicated to experimental art. This awesome must-see place was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in November of 1982. It was then designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2014. The Maitland Art Center is only one of the five museums that are part of the Art & History Museums - Maitland (A&H). And of course, I absolutely plan on visiting all of them!
The Maitland Art Center features one of the few examples of Mayan Revival Architecture, also known as Fantasy Architecture in the southeast.
Exploring the Maitland Art Center
We weren't able to go inside the telephone museum because it was closed, I think for renovations of some sort. However, we did get to explore all around the campus and visited the art gallery which features some beautiful, interesting contemporary pieces as well as an area to relax and read surrounded by beautiful, soft natural light. The Mayan Architectures are completely stunning! I was in awe with so much beauty and detail that go into these impressive architectures as well as the beautiful Mayan Chapel. It's a very peaceful place that will definitely leave you head over heels in love. We took tons of pictures which I'm very excited to share! For this trip, we went with my Nikon and iPhone 7 Plus. I'll take my Nikon film camera for the next trip and share some of the beauties in film...pinky promise. 😉
If you're in Central Florida and you haven't yet been to the Maitland Art Center, you must! Take a day to enjoy this amazing art gem and show support to the art museums!
