Cake Smash Photos - 5 Tips for your Session

Cake Smash...some call it a trend, and others refer to it as a cliché. But one thing is for certain - it's without a doubt one of the best ways to celebrate your baby's first year! One for the books...that's for sure!

Hiring a photographer to capture your baby's first birthday photos is one of the best investments you'll ever make. It's a celebration that deserves to be captured by a professional.

First birthday and Cake Smash photos are a great way to get in those baby portraits that you've kept holding back on.

Planning a Cake Smash

Once you’ve made the decision of having a cake smash session for your baby, there are some things you should keep in mind. These are some of the things we go through as part of the planning process for your session. But for the sake of this post, let's go over them one by one.

  1. Have your outfits ready at least two weeks before the session. Believe it or not, this one is huge! Primarily because of the creative process that goes behind setting the session. This will allow you to send me the outfit images with plenty of time ahead, which also allows me to match the colors and styles for the session properly.

  2. Bring at least 2 additional outfits. You already know how unpredictable babies can be! I recommend these additional outfits just in case anything unexpected happens in between shots. And of course, for after the session!

  3. Bring along your baby's favorite toy. This is a must for all the sessions with babies and a cake smash is no different. It will help us get the baby's attention and it also helps him/her feel more comfortable around me as the photographer.

  4. Have your baby try cake prior to the session. This will definitely help since it will give us an idea on what to expect. This is in case the baby has a certain reaction towards either the texture or taste of the cake.

  5. Known allergies? All cakes used for the session are colorant and nut-free. However, it's very important to communicate any known allergies prior to the session.

Booking your Session

The best time to book your cake smash session is at least 6-8 weeks before your baby turns one. This gives you time to choose your favorite images for printing. It also ensures they will be delivered just in time for the big birthday celebration!
